My 1-year-old got this small bigheaded octopus and I thought whether I could make something kinda like that. Just bigger. And derpier. And with a top hat!
Choose your yarn and hook carefully to ensure tight stitches. This prevents the stuffing from showing through.
Materials
4 mm and 3 mm crochet hooks
Pink, ivory, white, black and dark gray yarns
Fiber fill
Needle (I use curved needle)
Octopus body
Body is worked in a spiral. There is no need to join rounds but rather just continue around.
Use pink yarn
Don't fasten off but continue to make the legs.
Fasten off. Stuff the body with fiber fill. Not too tightly so bottom stays flat.
Octopus belly
Use ivory (or white) color. Legs in the belly are done identically as the legs in the body part.
Do not fasten off. We will attach the belly to the body next.
Keep the body upside down and align the belly so that legs match each other.
Make a stitch to the corner of the body and the last leg, going through both the belly and the body parts. Make a second stitch to the corner of body and next leg. Then continue up the leg.
4 sc along the leg, inc twice at the top of the leg and 4 sc back towards the body. Then 2 sc between legs. And repeat around stuffing legs very slightly as you go.
Eyes
Use 3 mm hook for the eyes. Use black yarn.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Position the eyes to the body so that irises point the opposite directions if going for that derpy gentleman look. Sew in place.
Top hat
Use 3 mm hook and dark gray yarn. You definitely don't want white stuffing showing through a dark hat, so tight gauge is recommended. Notice that beginning chain is counted as a stitch.
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.
Position the top hat to the other side of the head slightly more front than back. Stuff the hat and sew in place going through round 12. Curved needle helps with this. Sew tightly so stuffing won't slip through.
